2016 VALOR Public Safety Award Recipients

Public safety professionals from across Gwinnett received much deserved praise at today’s Gwinnett Chamber Valor Awards, presented by Mobile Communications of Gwinnett, Inc. and Motorola Solutions, Inc.

Awards were given to the men and women who have performed heroic and extraordinary acts to protect and serve the citizens of Gwinnett. Top honors included:

2016-Gold-Medal-of-Valor

2016 Gold Medal of Valor Recipients: Sergeant Roger Bell, Police Officers Senior Austin York, Daniel Bennett and Victor Cortez—Gwinnett County Police Department

Gwinnett County Police Department’s Sergeant Roger Bell, Police Officers Senior Austin York, Daniel Bennett and Victor Cortez were awarded the highest honor, the Gold Medal of Valor, for their quick thinking in stopping a violent assailant and getting the victims the medical treatment they needed.

2016 Silver Medal of Valor Recipient: Officer Joseph Harkleroad—Norcross Police

Norcross Police Officer Joseph Harkleroad was awarded the Silver Medal of Valor Award for showing great bravery in his actions while pulling a driver from a burning vehicle.

The Medal of Merit, which honors an outstanding program or person in the community that goes above and beyond, both on and off the job, was given to Officer Chance Belcher, with the Suwanee Police Department.

2016 Lifesaving Award Recipients:

2016 Lifesaving Award Recipients: Officers Joseph Boyd, Dylan Fields, Christian Matos, Kevin Robinson and Tyler Stevers—Gwinnett County Police Department

Gwinnett County Police Department’s Officers Joseph Boyd, Dylan Fields, Christian Matos, Kevin Robinson and Tyler Stevers received the Lifesaving Award. The officers initiated decisive action quickly to locate a victim and acted without hesitation in administering lifesaving treatment. Instead of focusing solely on the crime at hand and its investigation, the officers looked beyond the criminal act and assessed and addressed the life-threatening injuries to the victim.

Several Public Safety Awards were awarded for performing the job with exceptional skill, expertise, innovation and results:

Police Officer Senior Shawn Mycols, with the Gwinnett County Police Department, was named the Public Safety Person of the Year.

2016 Communications Officer of the Year: Communications Officer II Benjamin Marlow—Gwinnett County 911 Communications

Communications Officer II Benjamin Marlow, with Gwinnett County 911 Communications, was named the Communications Officer of the Year.

Austin Anglin and Ryan Slusher

The Public Safety Civilian Partnership Award was presented to Austin Anglin and Ryan Slusher, whose live-saving actions prevented a tragedy and saved two lives.
